Ascent is an association of researchers, doctors and inventors which is a major power within the Galactic Union. Their primary base is in the Fomalhaut star system.
Their stated desire is to greatly expand human knowledge and thereby unlock the mysteries of the universe. They believe that science and innovation can one day eradicate most of the galaxy's problems - including war, poverty, and perhaps even death itself.
Surprisingly, perhaps, the group has very little interest in deep space exploration. They believe that mankind has already stretched itself too thin, and should possibly reduce its furthest borders.
